History of SLA

South Lancaster Academy opened its doors as an academy on April 19, 1882. Advanced work was carried for several years in theology, teacher training, and business before its standing as a junior college was formally recognized in 1918. At that time, the name Lancaster Junior College was adopted. By 1922, a four-year theological course was being offered and degree-granting powers were conferred by the Massachusetts legislature. At the same time, the name was changed to Atlantic Union College. In 1922, the academy and college became separate institutions with the academy having its own board of trustees and faculty. Since 1967, SLA has been a twelve grade school. SLA maintains the historic ideals of Seventh-day Adventists (SDA) on matters of morals, dress, and conduct as its reason for existence. SLA is operated by the SDA churches of College, Lancaster Portuguese, Leominster, Sterling and Village. The administrations of SLA and Browning Elementary were combined in the 1980ā€™s. Preschool & Pre-K and After-School Care were added programs to the K-12 school in the interim time. In 2009, all preschool to twelfth grade programs came to be known under the name of South Lancaster Academy.

Statement of Faith

The aim of true education is to restore human beings into the image of God as revealed by the life of Jesus Christ. Only through the guidance of the Holy Spirit can this be accomplished. An education of this kind imparts far more than academic knowledge. It fosters a balanced development of the whole personā€”spiritual, physical, intellectual, and socio-emotionalā€”a process that spans a lifetime. Working together, homes, schools, and churches cooperate with divine agencies to prepare learners to be good citizens in this world and for eternity.

Welcome to our school! If you are reading this, then I am going to assume that you are interested in Christian education for any number of reasons. Let me share my school with you.

We have been providing Adventist Christian education to our community for over 135 years! The year we opened our doors was the same year Thomas Edison flipped on the switch to the first commercial electrical power plant, ushering in the electrical age.

So, what makes South Lancaster Academy so special that we have been around all of these years? Well, I could give you all kinds of clichĆ© statements that any number of schools could say the same thing about their schools, but I wonā€™t. Iā€™ll simply say this, weā€™re still here because God has a purpose for each and every one of our students, faculty, and staff. Whether itā€™s to change the world or make the world directly in front of us a better place, we are all here for a purpose. My purpose: To help my students find and follow Jesus and to provide them with the best education possible that sets them up for success in both their spiritual life and professional life.
